Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Our adaptation options will cover basic voice control training which can be applied to smartphones and tablets. Voice control software are mostly in-built in modern devices but can also be purchased separately. They enable students to communicate more freely.
We aim to provide audio book versions of all course materials and offer use of 'text-to-speech' software where this is not possible due to copyright restrictions. This also supports with fatigue and when holding a book steady may be difficult or impossible.guardians.
We recommend a list of reminder apps to help with organisation. Many apps can also sync calendar appointments, reminders, notes and other items so that these are accessible across platforms in order to help students, these can also be shared with carers and legal
Dictation or ‘speech-to-text’ software allows our students to get assignments, essays and other document writing done with ease and speed as it enables you to control a computer or other device using your voice.
In-built ‘text-to-speech’ software is made available on smartphones and tablets as well as on laptops and browsers in order to support your training, basic training on how to use these software options is also available upon request. This is especially helpful if fatigue affects the students' ability to concentrate or memorise complex topics.
Alternative keyboards and mice are available which can make it easier for you to control any device that you may be working with . This enables you to hold your hands and arms in different positions which could help keep them more steady than standard versions.
Wrist and arm supports are also available on request in order to help keep arms more comfortable and steady whilst using any computer device for your training.
Osteoarthritis
Our training sessions have numerous items available for students such as ergonomic keyboards which provide a more comfortable typing position for students who still have relatively good movement in their fingers. Upon assessment we will determine which option is preferred, i.e. curved or split (where the keyboard is separated into two halves).
Voice input is made available on all adapted devices and allow students to dictate rather than type. It can be used to command the devices to take actions such as ‘Open Word’ or 'Save document' and can be beneficial in numerous situations.
Word prediction software is also made available where not already existent on computers and laptops and works similarly to auto-correct on smart phones. It enables students to type quicker on smartphones and tablets and can also be used for document writing when completing essays, assignments of presentations.
Gel wrist rests that lie along the edge of the keyboard, mouse pads with raised gel rests or wrist ‘donuts’ (gel-filled bracelets that wrap around your wrist) can provide some additional support and comfort when using devices for your training and are inexpensive and made available if deemed beneficial during initial assessment.
Ergonomic mice provide the hand and wrist a more natural position when used as it adjusts the hand position in several ways, the vertical mice for example is more ‘bulky’ in size and turns the mouse grip on its side, so that students can grip it in a ‘handshake’ position.
Adjustable ergonomic mice enables students to adjust it to a comfortable angle based on personal preference as it hinges along its length like an oyster.
We also have bar mice available which students position in front of their keyboard with a roller ‘bar’ control by the thumb and tips of the fingers, or the heel of the hands.
Alternatively there is the hand shoe mice which cradles the hand, removing the need for gripping the mouse.
We also work with eye gaze technology which tracks what students are looking at on the screen and can be used to control the mouse pointer and to type with an on-screen keyboard.
